Some leading Indian operators like Reliance and Aircel are bringing 3G plans at 2G rates while the other leading operators like Airtel, Idea and Vodafone have just quietly increased 2G data plan rates.
The new plans are in a bid to increase margins than sales by the aforementioned companies. Talking about Airtel, in the Delhi and Mumbai regions, first you used to get 1 GB of 2G data at Rs. 125 while now you get mere 675 MB at that price while for 1 GB data you need to shed out Rs. 154. Idea Cellular has also increased the 1 GB 2G plan to Rs. 151. Even Vodafone has reduced the data to 675 MB from 1 GB at Rs. 125.
This is truly strange considering Reliance and Aircel have reduced 3G data plan rates to 2G rates and Airtel, Idea and Vodafone are increasing 2G data plan rates. For example, Reliance offers 1 GB of 3G data at Rs. 123 while Aircel recently brought unified 2G and 3G data plans.
