We all are largely awaiting the launch of Moto X but in the meanwhile Motorola has just announced the three new Droid smartphones for Verizon Wireless, the Droid Maxx, Droid Ultra and the Droid Mini. Let’s know more about these smartphones, Shall we?
Firstly talking of the Motorola Droid Maxx and Ultra, both the devices are basically identical in specs but for the battery difference and thus making a difference in the waistline as well. Both the devices feature an improved Kevlar coated back which has a glossy finish to them and also is thinner thus making the device thinner than last year’s Droids, the glossy is not just gloss but its a water repellent coating that will keep these smartphones dry.
Both the Droid Maxx and Ultra feature the same 5-inch OLED display of 720p resolution and thankfully they aren’t of the pentile variety. Both the devices run on Motorola’s home made dual-core processor called the Motorola X8 Mobile Computing System which is clocked at 1.7 Ghz and has quad-core graphics. Motorola din’t really reveal much details about it but they say the new chipset is twice faster than what previous gen Droids had. There’s 2 GB of Ram for your multitasking pleasure. Both the phones feature a 10 MP camera with a f/2.4 lens and a single LED flash. There’s 32 GB of onboard storage, 4G LTE and NFC as well.
The real difference between the Droid Ultra and Maxx comes with the battery as the Droid Maxx features a huge 3600 mAh battery which should give you 48 hours of life with normal usage while the Ultra features a modest 2,130 mAh battery. Then comes the difference in waistline although you won’t notice it much in the pictures but yes it’s there. The Droid Ulta is 7.18 mm thin and it is dubbed as the thinnest LTE smartphone and the thinnest Droid yet while the Droid Maxx ain’t that fat either as even with that huge battery it is only 8.5 mm thick. Surprisingly Motorola has put back capacity buttons on these phones rather than having on screen ones.
The Mini’s are all rage right now as Samsung released a Galaxy S4 Mini ad HTC with its One Mini and now Motorola too has joined the Mini bandwagon with the Droid Mini. The Droid Mini features the same specs as the Droid Ultra but for the smaller and denser 4.3-inch 720p Super AMOLED display and 16 gigs of on board storage. The internals are the same along with the same 10 MP camera as the Ultra. The device is a bit chubbier in design but it features a Kevlar unibody as well along with the display being edge to edge.
All of the Droids come with Android 4.2.2 and the interface is mostly stock but it features some really cool tricks by Motorola which we are also bound to see on the Moto X. There’s a feature Touchless control, you can wake up your phone with commands even when your phone is locked which sounds pretty cool. There’s this Active Display feature which is similar to Nokia’s Glance screen and it shows you little information on a blank screen. Droid Zap lets you send files to other smartphones over the cloud, there’s also the new camera interface.
The Droid Maxx, Ultra and Mini will cost you $299, $199 and $99 on contract respectively. They are available for pre-order now and can you can pre-order them here and they’ll start shipping August 20th.
