Nokia Lumia 1020 is official! 41 MP awesomeness comes to Windows Phone

The Lumia 1020 has finally been made official by Nokia in New York City at the ZoomReinvented event. The Lumia 1020 is one of the few devices which have leaked like crazy.

Lumia 1020

Firstly the device leaked in a few pictures, a video clip of its shutter in action, a mini review of the device and yesterday just before the Nokia event, the full spec of the device were out. So one must be thinking there would have been no excitement at the Lumia 1020 launch but thankfully Nokia managed to blow our minds once again, the last time they did the same was a year ago when they launched the 808 PureView.

Lumia 1020

The Lumia 1020 features the same 41 MP Zeiss sensor that the 808 has but comes with some more tweaks like the 2nd generation optical image stabilization, a 6 lens camera similar to the Lumia 925 and a Xenon flash to freeze moments in the light.

The PureView camera of the Lumia 1020 can take full resolution snaps and PureView modes oversampled images at the same time which is pretty cool. It can record 1080p videos at 4X Zoom and 720p videos at 6X Zoom.

Lumia 1020

The Lumia 925 came with the Nokia Smart Cam app which let you tinker with camera settings unlike the stock Windows Phone app which will also come to all the Lumia range thanks to Amber update and now Lumia 1020 takes it a step further with the Nokia Pro cam app which is understandable considering that amazing camera it comes with. The Nokia Pro cam app lets you manually adjust flash, focus, white balance, ISO, shutter speed, exposure and other camera centric features, all in a very interesting ring like interface with everything on the display at once.

Coming to the specs, The Lumia 1020 features the same 4.5-inch display of Amoled quality we saw in Lumia 925 and loved. There’s the same 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4 processor which powers both the Lumia 920 and 925 but it has 2 GB Ram which should be of use in all those intensive processing of the images. It is thinner and lighter than the Lumia 920 which should please a few folks thinner and at 10.4 mm thick and 158 grams although at the camera hump it is nearly 14 mm thick. The device also has Nokia’s rich recording microphone similar to what 808 has so we can surely get some concert recorded on this thing. Lumia 1020 will come in matte black, white and yellow versions.

The Lumia 1020 will be exclusive to AT&T at the start in the US and will cost you $299 on contract with pre-orders starting July 16th and a full launch on July 26th. The device will make its way to European countries in a couple of weeks but unfortunately there’s no word on when it will reach India so i guess we’ll just have to wait to get our hands on this beast. The Nokia Lumia 1020 sets a new benchmark in imaging, combining easy access to the advanced features and controls usually reserved for professional cameras with the simplicity and convenience of a smartphone. This Windows Phone 8 device comes packed with an impressive second generation 41 megapixel sensor – the largest back side illuminated (BSI) sensor available on a smartphone – which lets you capture high-resolution photos and video and uniquely zoom-in or out and reframe the smaller details within your pictures. It has a 4.5-inch AMOLED PureMotion HD+ display (1280 x 768 pixels, 16:9 aspect ratio) made with Gorilla® Glass 3 and is super sensitive to touch even with fingernails or while wearing gloves.

The Lumia 1020 is the first Windows Phone to include AT&T Locker, the free cloud storage app that lets you store and share your high-resolution images and video, as well as music, documents and more, in one convenient place. For a limited time, customers who purchase a Nokia Lumia 1020 can get 50 GB of free storage.** AT&T Locker is also available in the Windows Phone Store for Windows Phone 8 users. In addition, the Lumia 1020 has 32GB of onboard storage.
Nokia Lumia 1020 runs on AT&T 4G LTE, which currently covers more than 200 million people; with plans to expand to cover 300 million people by the end of 2014. Meanwhile, AT&T was named America’s fastest 4G LTE network, in PC Magazine’s 2013 Fastest Mobile Networks study of 30 markets – and also swept the top rankings in all six U.S. regions from coast to coast: Northeast, Southeast, North-Central, South-Central, Northwest and Southwest.***

“AT&T has sold more Windows Phones than any other U.S. carrier and we’re thrilled to add the Nokia Lumia 1020 to our growing portfolio,” said Jeff Bradley, senior vice president – Devices, AT&T. “This smartphone will change the way you think about taking pictures, from its professional camera-like controls to the ability to zoom-in a photo you’ve taken to discover new details you missed initially. We were the first carrier to launch a 4G LTE Windows Phone smartphone with the Nokia Lumia 900 and I can’t think of a better network to share and experience the impressive imaging capabilities of the Nokia Lumia 1020 than the nation’s largest 4G network.”

The Nokia Lumia 1020 has second generation optical image stabilization (OIS), ZEISS optics with a 6-lens design, and other impressive specifications like a manual shutter and xenon flash to help capture high-quality photos with the least amount of effort, both day and night.

Nokia Lumia 1020′s impressive imaging capabilities are not limited to still photos. It records HD video in 1080p at 30 frames per second and lets you zoom in up to four times closer to the action with no loss of quality (up to 6x closer in HD 720p). Additionally, it is equipped with digital high-performance microphones that record high quality stereo sound with deep bass, even at loud events.

Experienced photography professionals will appreciate the portability and convenience of having such a powerful camera in their pocket, while pre-installed tutorials provide novice users easy to follow lessons on using the manual camera controls for taking better photos. Nokia Lumia 1020 users also have access to Nokia Photo Masters, an online photography master class that includes device how-to’s, tips, tricks and practical projects that allow you to develop your skills even more.

To give you more control over how your photos turn out, the Nokia Pro Camera app lets you manually adjust flash, focus, ISO, shutter speed, white balance and exposure. Nokia Pro Camera lets you re-frame a photo to zoom in and out to discover new stories and reveal more context of the moment you captured. You can zoom, re-frame, straighten horizons, change orientation or make other alterations as many times as you want. You can also zoom in on images to discover details you couldn’t see at the time of capture.

If you want to share your photos with friends, the Nokia Lumia 1020 automatically creates 5 megapixel versions that are easy to share via e-mail, messaging or social media.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 comes with an attachable point-and-shoot-like leather wrist strap to make it even easier to take anywhere you go. Additionally, you can purchase the Nokia Camera Grip accessory. This sturdy case snaps on the phone to mimic the feel of an actual camera and includes extra battery power, shutter button and a universal tripod mount.

With a wealth of great features and technology made easy, Nokia Lumia 1020 will change the way you capture, edit and share pictures.
