Nokia’s patents suggest “Touchless Zooming and Panning” coming to Lumias

Gestures and touchless control are all rave in smartphones today with Samsung bringing touchless controls with the Galaxy S4 with Air View and Air Gestures, Motorola bringing some cool touchless tricks with the Moto X and now Nokia is planning to bring some really cool touchless controls to Lumia devices.

Some of the Nokia Lumias already have a hovering featuring with the Glance Screen where you can hover your hand in the ‘peek’ mode to bring up the Glance screen but if the latest patents from Nokia are anything to go by then Nokia is planning to take the touchless controls to a whole new level.

Nokia has patented two new technologies in reference to touchless controls. Check out the details below:

touchless

Hover based Text / object enlargement while reading or UI interaction. The letter or part of the word you hover on will get enlarged making it easy to read. This will also help in rendering touch inputs more easily.

Hover base handling of text input and icons. There will be three modes while using the keyboard to input text and once hover is done, the user enters into Zoom-pan mode from normal mode, where the part of text under hover gets zoomed in and also the text panning takes place based on movement of the hand. As soon as one touches the screen the device enters into pointing mode and hover interaction ceases. It may make text input really a breeze.
The touchless zooming and panning to input text and enlarging UI objects surely sounds really cool and hopefully Nokia brings it soon. I have used the Samsung’s Air View and its cool and great to show off but not really easy to use so i hope Nokia brings some much needed ease of use as well. We have no clue as to when these features will make its way onto Lumias but hopefully it’ll be soon.
