Most of the self-driving bus trials were done on the smaller pod-like vehicle within short distances. For the first time, a new bus trial in Singapore aims at involving the regular buses for the trial with clever technology, so that the trial buses can operate on the busy main roads of Singapore. The Land Transport Authority will start and autonomous bus trial with two electric hybrid buses. The buses have a host of sensors incorporated into them and Nanyang Technological University will construct the navigation software to control the buses.
Once the sensors and navigation system is ready the buses will travel roughly 1.4 kilometers distance from university and CleanTech one industrial park. When the trial will commence, the trial route may be extended to a nearby train station afterward, said by the government agency.
These buses will be able to perform below functions:
- Autonomous navigation
- Localization with 3D mapping
- Lane detection
- Obstacle and Pedestrian detection
- Day and Night operation
- Traffic light and sign detection
We hope the trial will be a success and we can see the electric buses soon be running on roads of Singapore.
