Windows 8.1 is now available to download as an update from the Store

All you Windows 8 users waiting for the Windows 8.1 update can finally rejoice as the Windows 8.1 update is now available for your download through the store.

Anyone using Windows 8 will get a prompt from the Store to update to the brand new Windows 8.1. The update is free of course for all Windows 8 users and the update will not erase any data, your apps, data and files will all be retained but you may backup everything just in case.

Windows 8.1

The things are different for Windows 8.1 Preview users, if you installed the 8.1 Preview from the Store after being on Windows 8 before then you can go to Windows 8.1 directly but your apps will be lost and you will need to re-install them although your personal files will be retained. If you installed Windows 8.1 Preview from an ISO file or did a clean install then you can still get the update from the Store although you would have to buy a key for activation.

If you are a Windows RT user then there’s the Windows 8.1 RT update for you as well. There are a lot of app updates as well once you have upgraded to Windows 8.1. In case you haven’t got the update prompt then click on this link which will take you to the Windows 8.1 update page in Windows Store.

There are quite some good improvements that Microsoft brings with Windows 8.1 like Bing search built right into the OS, a start button, new Tile sizes in the Start Screen, improved snapping and much more.
