Just yesterday, Xiaomi launched its very first “Made in India” smartphone, the new Xiaomi Redmi 2 Prime. The new Android smartphone has been manufactured at the Foxconn plant in Sri City in India., thanks to the “Make in India” initiative.
As you might have guessed, the new Redmi 2 Prime is an upgraded version of the popular Redmi 2 smartphone. While the smartphone does not bring a lot of upgrades, it brings a few important ones like more storage and RAM. Well, here’s all the Redmi 2 Prime features you should know about:
Design and Build Quality
The Xiaomi Redmi 2 Prime features an identical design to the Redmi 2 and while, it’s nothing outlandish or out of the ordinary, it’s good enough for the price. The back features a matte build, which means the grip and hold should be good enough. The back is also fingerprint and grease resistant. The device comes in the usual white and dark grey variants. You can also swap out the back panels for colorful shells, which will give the device more character.
There’s the same 4.7-inch IPS display from the Redmi 2 and it’s nothing to scoff about because it’s great for the price. The display, manufactured by Sharp/AUO packs in a HD (1280x720p) resolution. The display is fully laminated to the glass, which is a scratch resistant Dragontrail glass. Xiaomi also allows you to adjust the color temperature of the display.
Battery and Performance
The Redmi 2 Prime features a 2200 mAh battery and it also supports Quick Charge 1.0, which means faster charging by up to 20%. The device is powered by Qualcomm’s 64-bit Quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor clocked at 1.2 GHz, which should bring decent performance. The Redmi 2 suffered a bit with the lack of RAM and this is where Redmi 2 Prime gets better. The Redmi 2 Prime packs in 2 GB RAM, which means better multitasking and performance.
The camera units are the same from the Redmi 2. There’s an 8 MP BSI camera with flash on the back along with a 2 MP front-facing camera. For the price, the Redmi 2 Prime packs in some decent camera chops.
Software and UI
The Xiaomi Redmi 2 Prime features the company’s MIUI 6.0 on top of Android 5.0 Lollipop. Whether that’s a good thing or bad depends on if you are a fan of stock Android or skins.
The smartphone packs Dual SIM with 4G support and that’s not all, as the device supports 4G connectivity on both the slots. So, that’s as good as it gets in the affordable smartphone apart range. Apart from the 4G support on both SIM slots, there’s the usual array of connectivity options like WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and more.
Launch and Availability
The Xiaomi Redmi 2 Prime was announced yesterday and it’s now available to get at Mi India’s official website and the company’s online partners Flipkart, Snapdeal and Amazon for a very affordable price of Rs. 6,999.
